Welcome to Woman’s Hour: The TERF Report.

In today’s episode I talk about Ohio’s Senate Bill 1, which was enacted and signed into law earlier this year, and is set to go into effect in June. Its formal title is the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act. It was supported by Republicans, who control both chambers of the legislature, and opposed by Democrats.

This bill strikes me as an appalling overreach of legislative authority. It bans student events or campaigns related to what it refers to as “controversial beliefs or policies.” And it defines “controversial beliefs or policies” to mean “any belief or policy that is the subject of political controversy, including issues such as climate policies, electoral politics, foreign policy, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, immigration policy, marriage, or abortion.”

I understand why many of us voted Republican, many for the first time, in November of 2024. I get it. But this is not the road I want us going down.
