I've been saying for years: "When this is all over, there will be no apologies. There will be no admissions of guilt. The pushers of this moral panic will slink back into the woodwork, pretending they never did what they did and adamantly demanding, under the threat of narcissistic rage, that nobody EVER mention ANY of this to them again."
That's how the Satanic panic went. That's how the Trans panic will go.
I, for one, will NEVER forget who got on board with this blatant misogynisitic agenda that has harmed so many people, especially women and children. Forgive? Maybe if I see a bended knee and abject apology, but even then, I’m not so sure. It’s been so egregious. Women have been living — and still are — with an existential challenge to our existence wreaking havoc in every aspect of our lives. Beyond belief that we have had to wage this battle, and it’s still not over.
Oh, WE will never forget. But they will spend the rest of their lives protecting themselves from us remembering.
I can't tell you how furious I am to have reached my sixties, after a lifetime of fighting for women's rights, and now be forced to fight for my rights ALL OVER AGAIN.
My brother went through the Satanic panic. (I wrote about it for PITT: https://www.pittparents.com/p/moral-panics-of-our-time-the-satanic) Six years of hell. Then suddenly he changed his mind. No apologies, no admissions of what he'd put us all through (especially our grandmother, who died while he was still accusing her of being a Satanic abuser).
I was the one he'd been sharing all his imaginary garbage with, so I'm the one he cut off all contact with after he was finished with it. Twenty-five years of silence. Then recently, I received word from him that he wants to talk to me about being my "trans sister."
Yeah, right, buddy.
Moral panics destroy everything they touch--families, jobs, lives, and human rights. And the people in them are never sorry.
It reminds me of the Nuremberg trials. I can see my mother and sisters now: "We were just following directions. We didn't REALLY believe what we were saying!"
I will never get an apology from my mothers who told me that I don't think about things the right way. I will never get an apology from my sister who threatened to keep her sons away from me due to my "oppressive" viewpoints. I will never get an apology from the former friends who called me names and dissed me like I was a monster.
But, dammit, I want the damn apology. I want all of them to admit they were wrong. It's never going to happen... Sad.
Their apologies mean nothing to me. Children and women knowingly damaged and I don't believe for a second they care. All they care about is the herd is on a new compass heading, and they don't want to be left out. I'll be polite but nothing more.
Well said, and Anas Sanwar is a perfect Exhibit A. This is exactly why, after having made the rookie mistake of participating in thanking Moulton and Suozzi for their talk, no walk, I will not knowingly make that mistake again. What I am looking for now is Democratic and non-aligned electeds and candidates who do walk the walk (and who otherwise share the values I believe important in these times). I think Jonah Wheeler has shown the way, and if he continues as he has so far, I will be contributing to his reelection campaign. What I have been pondering lately is how best to identify other such candidates, follow their progress so as to make the best possible overall judgments about them, and then support them in whatever ways I think I can.
Kara Dansky is pretty good at finding other such candidates. She's watching the bills for both sides, and she certainly notices when a Democrat breaks ranks to vote for reality.
That’s true, and indeed there are a number of people who are reporting out instances of this, but what I think we need here requires more of a group effort. What I am hoping is, over time, folks with the IT skills to do this might be able to build a central place where we can all report in, perhaps along the lines of the way he cheated has folks report in on males winning female sports events. I don’t have those skills, but I would certainly be a willing contributor.
I suspect that if you want an organization collecting data specifically on Democratic lawmakers, you'll probably have to start it yourself. I imagine if you put out a call for an IT person for hire, you'd be able to find someone. Let us know if you decide to! 🤞
Putting me on the spot, eh, Eleganta? An IT thing like this is not something I could begin to take on. But it is certainly something to which I would contribute were it to be developed.
Not gonna happen. A contributor, yes. I will look forward to the opportunity to do that. Meanwhile, the orgs with which I volunteer already are keeping me busy!
They are easy to identify. For those in office, just look at their voting record. For those seeking new office, ask "How would you have voted on HR.28?" or whatever bill is relevent to the office being sought.
Even easier, and correct 99% of the time, is that NO Democrat is deserving of support.
You are baaaack! So, this is what’s interesting to me: not so much assessing the voting records once you know about them (I agree with you that’s straightforward), but rather the identifying of folks whose records might be good, so worth supporting, in the first place. On the state and local level, it appears they are starting to pop up here and there—Nebraska and Georgia are two of which I recently became aware. I would love to have a landing spot on the order of hecheated where we could all report in when we spot such folks.
Mark, this is getting tiresome. We have had numerous exchanges about this. I don’t mind at all that your viewpoint is different from mine and others, but you can’t seem to resist keep coming back with the same tired lines, often accompanied by criticisms of and assignments for others. I have been trying not to do this, but this is truly unconstructive, so I am going to block you.
I want the groveling apology and then I want every one of these legislators to lose their next election because of this issue. I believe we’re still many years away from the reckoning. I hope I’m wrong, but the NYT coverage somehow barely mentions that this was an action brought by (liberal) women while being sure to play up “anti-trans activists” celebrating, and drawing parallels to Viktor Orban and, of course, Trump.
I will never trust them, groveling apology or not. I have no doubt that whatever direction the herd takes next, even if it was going right back to crushing children and women, they'll be onboard.
It will take our Supreme Court for this issue to be resolved. Title IX is law of the land. No presidential EO can override. Trump EO shouldn’t have been necessary but Biden went all in with upending constitution. Dems will continue to hang on until SC puts an end to this malarkey.
Another 100% agree. I voted a split ticket my entire life, until 4 years ago. I will never vote D again, unless the requirements you listed have been met.
Thank you, Bryan. You’re a good man, and what you write here resonates hugely. You wrote an extremely insightful comment about these issues some time back that I thought so good I shared it with a friend of mine who is also progressive, but was in an earlier phase of going through what you describe here. I think your comment helped him a lot to find a new path forward. It helped me, too, because I knew that, in you, I had found someone who shared my overall values but also recognized how off the rails all too many progressives have gone. So, tip of the 🎩 to you. Please know you have a friend in me.

Look at DIAG - Democrats for an Informed Approach to Gender. https://www.di-ag.org/
Of course! I don't know why I didn't think of them first. Thanks, Luna!

We'd all have your back!

The number of Democrats in office who have EVER cast a vote against gender ideology in ANY way is VERY small.
In the US Congress, House and Senate, the number is TWO (and was ZERO before the recent HR.28 vote).
In all state legislatures combined (thousands of people), the total number may be as high as 20, almost all in red states.
Of course at least one of those was since primaried and removed, Shawn Nicole Thierry in Texas.
DIAG should take on the task of constructing this very small database.

Helen Joyce has an interesting take on Sanwar—and also what comes next—here: https://x.com/TimesRadio/status/1912797337547583857
Love the term reverse ferret.

Women have always told our stories of being abused by males.
Nobody ever listens to us.
Maybe someone will listen to you.
Exactly. When we tell our stories it just makes everyone uncomfortable and they resent us for it.
Some things never change.
Thank you.
