Sarah (Tim) McBride currently serves as a member of the Delaware state Senate.1 He is running for a seat in the House of Representatives in the US Congress. He states on his campaign page:

Sarah McBride is running for Congress because she’s a proven changemaker – in the Delaware State Senate, she’s led the way in proving that small states can do big things. Now, she’s running to take that work to Washington.

In order to make sense of the difference in pronoun usage between my introductory paragraph and McBride’s campaign statement, readers need to know that:

  1. McBride is a man whose birth name was Tim (I’m willing to assume for the sake of argument that he’s had it legally changed to Sarah);

  2. McBride decided in 2012, after serving as the student president of American University as Tim, that he’s a woman named Sarah; and

  3. I never use pronouns that do not align with a person’s actual sex.

I have known for some time now that McBride is running for Congress. What I didn’t know until very recently is that he is facing a challenger in the Democratic primary, and that his challenger has support from some very interesting places.
