Earlier today, I posted a new FFS (Female Free Speech) Friday piece honoring a young woman named Ava, who bravely spoke out during a meeting on Wednesday in support of a very simple measure to reevaluate 2019 guidelines that allow students to participate in sports on the basis of their “gender identities” in New York, and mentioned that I was at the meeting.

This post provides some behind-the-scenes observations of what happened.

It was a meeting of the Community Education Council for District 2 (CEC D2). Maud Maron was the council member who proposed the measure, called Resolution 248. It truly is a very sensible measure. All it does is ask the city to convene a new committee (to include female athletes) to reevaluate the 2019 guidelines. The council voted to pass it in March. Earlier this month, a council member who was on the losing side of that vote introduced a new resolution, called Resolution 254. That resolution would rescind the democratically enacted Resolution 248. The Wednesday meeting was for the council to hear from members of the public about Resolution 254 and then vote on it. I’m happy to report that the council voted down Resolution 254 and that Resolution 248 stands for now.

Maron has posted some of the speeches in a thread on X. Readers can view that thread here. It gives you a glimpse into the absolute madness that ensued over the course of the three and a half hour meeting. But nothing can compare to having experienced it first-hand. I’ll do my best to capture that experience here.
