“Trans” is just the medicalization of nonconformity with sex stereotypes and the U.S. medical establishment is stating that explicitly

Yesterday, evolutionary biologist Colin Wright posted this piece on Substack. It’s called The Transgender Umbrella Casts Its Shadow Over Gender Nonconformity: Why are we pretending we don’t know why kids think they’re trans?
This piece documents something that many of us know, but that generally is not talked about: “Transgender” is nothing other than the medicalization of physically healthy people who don’t conform to traditional sex stereotypes. What the piece makes new, and very visible, is that the U.S. medical establishment knows this and is saying it out loud.
According to the piece:
The American Psychological Association (APA), which is in charge of establishing the norms for clinical practice in the United States, defines “transgender” as “an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth.”
The Endocrine Society, which is the world’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to research on hormones and the practice of endocrinology, defines “transgender” in their Clinical Practice Guideline as “an umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with their sex designated at birth.” This is also the same definition used by the Pediatric Endocrine Society.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA), which is the main professional psychiatric in the United States and the largest psychiatric organization in the world, defines “transgender” as “an umbrella term describing individuals whose gender identity (inner sense of gender) or gender expression (outward performance of gender) differs from the sex or gender to which they were assigned at birth.” And their definition of “gender expression” is “the outward manifestation of a person’s gender, which may or may not reflect their inner gender identity based on traditional expectations.”
Lastly, the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which purports to be “the nation’s leading science-based, data-driven, service organization that protects the public’s health,” defines “transgender” on the LGBT health section of their website as “an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity or expression (masculine, feminine, other) is different from their sex (male, female) at birth.”
All these institutions are saying the same thing: if your expression or behavior is different from what is “typically associated” with your sex based on “traditional expectations,” you are transgender. This is literally equating common gender nonconformity (i.e. masculine females, feminine males, and androgynous people of either sex) with transgenderism.
I don’t think that most people know this. We have all been told that “transgender” is either an actual medical condition and that some people are “born in the wrong body or that it is purely a matter of self-identification. Both narratives are drilled into us every day by the media, and children are being taught these things today in most schools across the country.
Maybe none of this is surprising. I know a (TERF) woman who is currently in medical school and who is appalled at what she and her fellow students are being taught. She occasionally sends me sample lessons from her school’s curriculum and they say things like (I’m paraphrasing): “Female patient presents complaining of lower back pain. Examination reveals potential prostate complications. Patient admitted for further evaluation.” The independent website Plebity reported on this phenomenon in May of 2021 in a piece called Gender Ideology is Wreaking Carnage in Our Medical Schools - an Eye Witness Report.
It’s all a lie, and the U.S. medical establishment knows that it’s a lie.
Someone tweeted this in response to Colin’s article, and I completely agree.
Our society needs to normalize nonconformity with sex stereotypes, not medicalize it.
To that end, the U.S. Chapter of Women’s Declaration International (WDI USA) has drafted a bill for consideration by Congress that would create legal protections for women and girls on the basis of sex; lesbian, gay, and bisexual people on the basis of sexual orientation; and everyone on the basis of nonconformity with sex stereotypes. It’s called the Equality for All Act and you can read it here. To the best of our knowledge, it has not been introduced. It’s intended as a replacement for the so-called Equality Act, which would obliterate the material reality of biological sex throughout U.S. civil rights law by redefining it out of existence. That bill passed in the House of Representatives in February of 2021 and has been before the Senate since then. On March 12, 2021, the WDI USA sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Schumer, signed by thousands of women all over the world, explaining how devastating the Equality Act would be to women and girls globally.
WDI USA is encouraging everyone to send the bill to their representatives and senators via this action page. Taking action is very easy using this page. All you have to do is enter your information and the page will automatically know which representatives and senators to send it to. WDI USA will never misuse or share personal information.
If you haven’t, please consider signing the Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights. You can find the U.S. chapter of Women’s Declaration International here.
