All of the language below appears on the change.org petition to support Christy Hammer - a public university professor whose students are demanding that she be fired because she said that there are two sexes, a fact that is undeniably true. In response, one of her students said, “It’s just not something you say out loud.”
I did not write the petition, but I have checked it all out and it’s all true.
Jennifer Gingrich started this petition to Teacher Education Dept. Chair, USM Flynn Ross and 2 others
In a class in the Education department at the University of Southern Maine, Professor Christy Hammer stated that there are only two sexes in humans. All but one of her students disagreed and walked out of class, branding this simple statement of biological fact to be 'transphobic'. They are demanding she be replaced as their instructor.
From the Bangor Daily News: “I asked [Hammer] how many sexes there were,” student Elizabeth Leibiger, who intends to become an English teacher, reports. “She said, ‘Two.’ I felt under personal attack.”
A university that cannot teach facts because students find them too hard to handle is useless as an educational institution. We the undersigned ask USM President Jacqueline Edmondson, Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky and Chair of the Teacher Education Department Flynn Ross to stand firmly behind Professor Hammer and issue a public statement to the effect that she will neither be replaced nor required to stop stating the fact that sex in humans is binary.
"All mammals have two sexes, and man is a mammal...There are people who want to change their gender, but they can't do it. You remain XY or XX." ~Dr. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Biology
"There are two sexes. There are also some males and females with chromosomal aneuploidies or disorders of sexual development. These are medical conditions, not different sexes." ~Dr. Alex Blakemore, Professor of Genetics and Head of Life Sciences at Brunei University
"Evolution itself produces a binary of sex! To be anthropomorphic, evolution wants a binary of sex."~Dr. Jerry Coyne, Evolutionary Biology professor emeritus at the University of Chicago
"Race is a spectrum. Sex is pretty damn binary." ~Dr. Richard Dawkins, Biologist and Humanist
"Males are the sex that produce small gametes (sperm) and females produce large gametes (ova). There are no intermediate gametes, which is why there is no spectrum of sex. Biological sex in humans is a binary system."~Dr. Colin Wright, Biologist
"Sex is not a spectrum...With sex, there are only two categories, male and female, and even if we want to take account of disorders of sexual development we cannot say that this produces anything like a spectrum. It would be a bit like saying that because some people can have nine fingers and others eleven, the number of fingers is a spectrum." ~Dr. David Curtis of the UCL Genetics Institute
"Humans are sexually dimorphic, with rare intersex conditions being anomalous developments of dimorphic sexual classes. It is not possible to change biological sex." ~Dr. Susan Bewley, Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Women’s Health, St Thomas’ Hospital
"That there are only two sexes is a basic fact not only of the human species but in all species that have evolved anisogametic sexual reproduction (almost all complex life on earth)." ~Dr. Emma Hilton, Biologist at the University of Manchester
