What follows is a talk that Canadian writer Meghan Murphy gave at a Let Women Speak event in Austin Texas on August 12, 2023, with a short introduction, also by Meghan. She published it on her Substack and I’m sharing it here (with images from her post) with her permission.
I’m also excited to be facilitating a panel with Meghan, Mary Lou Singleton, Fran Luck, and Ann Menasche titled “The Debate Over Working with the Right” during the upcoming WDI USA convention.
I spoke at Let Women Speak Austin, organized by Michelle Evans, on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Our mics and megaphone were drowned out by trans activist chants, including “Trans rights our human rights” and “TERFs go home” throughout, but the event was well attended and violence-free, thanks in large part to our excellent security team.
As our speeches could not be heard well in the recording, I’ve decided to publish mine here.
I am ever grateful for all the work Michelle did to organize and fundraise to ensure this event went on, despite predictable attempts to shut us down, as well as to all the women — many of whom traveled from out of state — who attended and spoke. As women have been bullied, censored, silenced, and threatened in order to keep them out of public conversations about gender identity ideology, it is ever important we continue to force ourselves into the conversation, and refuse to be pushed out.
Thanks everyone for coming out today.
My name is Meghan Murphy, and I’m going to tell you the truth. I am going to tell you the truth about this movement – the transgender movement. About what it is and what it is not.
This is not a human rights movement. It is not about protecting a marginalized population of people. It is not about letting people be themselves. It is not about breaking the “gender binary.” This is certainly not about protecting kids. It’s not about “letting people pee.”
What the trans movement is is a misogynistic movement started by men who believe women are nothing more than a collection of parts and stereotypes. That women are nothing more than objects for their taking. Nothing more than a sexualized idea – a fetish.
This is not a grassroots movement. This is a corporate endeavour, started by wealthy men invested in Big Pharma and biotech and their own narcissistic fantasies. It is a movement that tells kids that if they don’t fit into rigid gender stereotypes their bodies are “wrong” and must be “fixed” through medical interventions that render them sterile and leave their bodies permanently mutilated, with a host of health problems — medicalized for life. It is a movement that tells women they must sit down and shut up, even if they’re in danger, even if they see kids in danger, even they are subjected to verbal abuse or threats, even if their rights are in jeopardy, even if they know they are being lied to.
It is a movement that says the truth is hate.
This is not a feminist movement. This is not about inclusion or love. This is an anti-woman hate movement that is destroying kids lives and all of the sex-based rights countless women have fought for for well over a century.
This movement, supported by powerful institutions and NGOs across the world, by Big Media, Big Tech, and Big Pharma, claims to want to protect the marginalized from “hate” and “violence,” yet its activists — its foot soldiers — use threats, hate, silencing, censorship, bullying, violence, and verbal abuse as their primary tactics. This movement claims “trans women are women,” but has dissolved the word woman into nothingness.
“What is a woman?” is now a controversial question to ask, for the first time in history.
This movement is a cover for predatorial men who are now being housed in women’s prisons as it is their “right” under gender identity laws embraced by liberal governments that claim to be feminist, it is a cover for predatorial men who want access to women and girls’ change rooms. And these men are being protected by our politicians, by journalists whose job it is to report the facts, by human rights organizations like the UN and the Human Rights Campaign, by the ACLU (which is meant to defend American Civil liberties, like free speech, not to defend men’s right to silence women who refuse to sign on to their religion or to validate their sexual fetishes), even by women who claim to be feminists, who have sold out in the worst way possible, and are standing by — cheering even — as women lose everything.
This is a movement that is destroying our sense of reality, our language, and our ability to speak the truth. This is a movement that destroys everything it touches – that destroys the very foundations of nature and humanity and democracy. This movement is a lie.
Women are adult human females. Men are adult human males. A mother is a woman and only a woman. A father is a man and only a man. A girl can like sports and have short hair and like playing with trucks and she’s still a girl. A boy can wear pink and have long hair and play with dolls and he is still a boy. Only females give birth. Only males have penises. There is no “her cock,” Bill Maher. And don’t let anyone force you to say there is.
Don’t let anyone tell you that what I am saying is “hate speech.” And don’t let anyone tell you that women speaking publicly about their rights and about reality is dangerous, violent, or some kind of hate crime.
We live in a democratic, free society. We have the right to free speech. We are half of the population, and we will not be erased, and we will not remain silent while everything we know to be true and everything that has been fought for is lost.
True. It IS a lie; first to the patient, as there is no actual changing of sex possible. Secondly, the rest of us are coerced into affirming that lie; of course you "pass". You're a beautiful "woman"! ("man!"). And the saddest part of this lie is the long-term results of taking cross-sex hormones and their effects on the body.
Brilliant speech, Meghan. I want to email it to my daughter, 28, who wrote a feminist thesis in law school but who now fights for men intent upon destroying women's right to speak and be heard. But we are estranged and she has practically ordered me to give her 'space'. So I won't - for now anyway. But one day I hope she will know that "This is not a feminist movement. This is not about inclusion or love. This is an anti-woman hate movement that is destroying kids lives and all of the sex-based rights countless women have fought for for well over a century." Thank you for fighting so eloquently and tirelessly for us all.
