Yesterday, the Scottish Parliament passed something called the “Gender Recognition Reform Bill.” I wrote about that in Newsweek, in a piece called “The Global Abolition of Sex.” The Spanish Congress did something similar, but the situation is slightly different there, in that the Spanish bill will now move to the upper chamber of the legislature, whereas in Scotland, it’s a done deal.
What these laws are saying is that women and girls do not exist as a coherent category of people and that any man (or minor male as young as 16 in Scotland) can legally become a woman by declaring himself such, so long as he “lives in” his “acquired gender.” Women are particularly outraged at this egregious assault on our human rights, and plenty of men support us.
According to the Scottish government, moving forward, anyone who wants to have his or her legal sex changed will “be required to make a legally binding declaration that they are already living in their acquired gender.”
Which raises some questions: What is an “acquired gender?” And what does it mean to “live in” one?
