Lesbians: Erased by the Democratic Party

On December 29, 2022, Women’s Declaration USA (WDI USA) vice president Lauren Levey sent the message below to U.S. Senate Majority Leader (also her senator) Charles Schumer. She sent it to both Senator Schumer's public account and to the private account of one of his top staffers, and also submitted it via his Senate website. I am sharing it here with her permission.
Dear Senator Schumer,
I am a resident of Greene County, New York. I’ve been a Democrat all my life because I hold the values of the political left, including full equality of opportunity for women and minorities to participate in all aspects of U.S. political life, economic life, education, sports, and culture; and universal access to health care, adequate housing, adequate nutrition, and other social services. Until now. Now there is an irreconcilable conflict between these values that support liberty and justice and democracy and responsive government, and the top-down, authoritarian, corporate-funded, global campaign to roll back women’s rights and lesbian’s rights by erasing the category of sex in law, thereby preventing women and lesbians from organizing for our rights as a sex class. The rallying cry of diversity and inclusion silences and excludes women and especially lesbians, while including any man who wishes to be included in those sex-based categories.
As a woman, a lesbian, and a Jew, the values of the left have personal application for me, as well as being in line with my views on social justice. Despite the fact that antisemitic attacks appear to be at the highest incidence rate in my lifetime, I am currently experiencing the greatest infringement on my rights as a woman (the sex), and especially as a lesbian. This infringement is directly due to the lie called “gender identity”, which has been inserted into law and policy at every level almost entirely without debate. This insertion has been accomplished in the US by the Democratic Party; and it has been accomplished sometimes by stealth and sometimes simply by edict, without public discussion of the impact of “gender identity” on women, homosexuals, children, and men and women who simply do not conform to sex-stereotypical behaviors. The public overwhelmingly doesn’t buy it; every American, whether or not he or she claims otherwise, knows that a woman is an adult human female. That the Democratic Party denies this is having grave consequences, some of which will be felt by the Party itself. But my purpose in writing to you today is to discuss how “gender identity” affects lesbians in particular.
Lesbians are females, we are exclusively attracted to other females, and we are frequently not seen as feminine in presentation or behaviors. However we behave or present, lesbians are not ever male. By definition, lesbians are never attracted to a feminine “gender”; we are attracted only to females who may or may not be feminine. Lesbians are not “LGBT” people. We are not even “LGB” people. We are simply lesbians. Force-teaming us, by law, with the TQ+ – men who lie about their sex, men who get off on wearing high heels and wigs, men who pursue a lesbian fetish, men who enjoy drag shows and other porn, men who are attracted to children – has been devastating to lesbians. Here’s how:
Lesbians are once again forced by law to be re-closeted as outlaws, to meet in secret to evade the presence of male predators who the law says must be included in all of our public spaces.
Lesbian university students are being forced to share dormitory rooms with men.
Incarcerated lesbians are forced to share living space with violent male predators.
Lesbian bars, which existed even in the 1950s when being lesbian was a crime, no longer exist. They are universally overrun with men who claim to be lesbians, who come into those bars to harass lesbians, and who can no longer be expelled.
Lesbian online dating sites are filled with men who claim to be lesbians. Lesbians are being thrown off such sites when we object or identify them as men.
Lesbians are harassed openly and with impunity in the streets as trans-exclusionary “terfs”, right-wing bigots, and Nazis who deserve to be tortured and killed for rejecting the notion that men can be women; as people who are really men but won’t admit it; and as “ugly” when we fail to comply with men’s “beauty” standards.
Lesbians, along with other women who reject “gender identity”, are physically attacked when we try to speak out about our rights in public places; and in recent months police have failed to protect our political rallies.
Lesbian girls and other nonconforming girls are being told they are probably boys, and are having their bodies mutilated with irreversible hormones and surgeries that will not only sterilize them and harm their hearts and bones, but will also likely preclude sexual gratification, forever. “Gender identity” indoctrination of kids is carried out in public schools, often deliberately without parents’ knowledge. State agencies are undermining the parent-child relationship in order to promote gender identity ideology. This is how cults behave.
Lesbians are being subjected to a global campaign of erasure in public law and policy that results in physical harassment and attacks throughout public life that goes largely unprevented and unpunished. Government representatives, including legislators, judges, and police, stand by, seemingly in approval of the acts of hate perpetrated against us. The current position of lesbians reminds me of the position of Jews in Germany in the years leading to the Holocaust, with gangs of violent “trans youth” – masked, hooded, violent, and dressed in black – attacking lesbians with escalating violence and with impunity.
This campaign is driven in the US by the Democratic Party. There is no legitimate, definable category based on “gender identity.” In contrast, the categories of sex and sexual orientation (based on sex) are easily definable based on material evidence.
Lesbians have had it. Increasing numbers of other women have had it. Numerous mutilated children and adults have rejected gender identity ideology and are preparing their lawsuits. Many gay men have had it. We have warned you. I have personally warned you, Senator Schumer. The Democratic Party is poised to fall on the sword of “gender identity.” This is on you.
Sincerely,
Lauren Levey
