Earlier this morning, the US House voted to pass the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023. This historic piece of legislation would (1) clarify that for Title IX purposes, sex is grounded in biology and (2) require that federally funded schools maintain single-sex sports. It’s a big win for female athletes. It is unlikely to pass in the Senate and in the extremely unlikely event that it does, President Biden has promised to veto it. The US chapter of Women’s Declaration International (WDI USA) supports the bill.
Even just the path to getting to House passage wasn’t easy.
