June 12, 2025

On June 10, it was announced that the state of California has sued the US Department of Justice for threatening to withdraw funding if the state continues to allow male athletes to participate in girls’ sports. I don’t have anything particularly interesting to say about that, other than the fact that it’s annoying because Governor Gavin Newsom said just a few months ago that allowing male athletes to compete in girls’ sports is “deeply unfair.” If you’d like to read more about the case, have a look at a thread by CA lawyer Julie Hamill.

Also on June 10, the House Judiciary Committee voted to pass HR 3492, the Protect Children’s Innocence Act of 2025. This bill would make it a federal offense to give minors puberty-blockers and wrong-sex hormones, and to perform “gender affirming” surgeries on minors, under certain reasonable circumstances and with certain reasonable exceptions—a position that has the support of a clear majority of US voters.

During debate on the matter, House Democrats predictably lost their minds.

In general, I am not a huge fan of adding criminal offenses to the federal code. Most criminal offenses are a matter of state law, and I would like to keep it that way. However, I’m okay with this new proposed federal criminal offense (which most likely will not pass anyway). Read on to learn more.
