Gender, gender everywhere: the cult of gender

Gender is a cult. All of it, whether it’s coming from the political right or the political left. It cannot be reformed and it cannot be made pure by adding the word “identity” after it. Women and girls have been kicked, spat upon, beaten, tortured, raped, murdered, exploited, burned, enslaved, and forced to give birth for thousands of years on the basis of sex and society’s expectations of how women and girls ought to behave because we are women and girls (this is precisely what gender is - societal expectations imposed on the basis of sex). 

It doesn’t matter whether these expectations are being imposed by the right-wing men who want us to be handmaids or the left-wing men who want to erase us. It’s all poison and it has to go.

This has all been made exceptionally clear by a recent episode involving Senator Josh Hawley’s questioning of Berkeley Law professor Khiara Bridges during a hearing on abortion rights.

During this questioning, Hawley asks Bridges whether the class of “people who have the capacity for pregnancy” is “women,” and Bridges spews a bunch of nonsensical gibberish about “cis” and “trans” and “non-binary.” He asks her if abortion is a women’s rights issue and she fails to answer the question, blithely handing the future of abortion access to the political right, which will decimate it. 

What many people probably don’t realize is that both of the individuals involved in this exchange are members of the cult of gender.
