FFS Friday: The UK Green Women’s Declaration

Today’s FFS Friday celebrates the women of the UK group Green Women’s Declaration (GWD), who are suing the UK Green Party over its refusal to allow them a stall during last year’s annual party conference.

The Green Women’s Declaration is all about breaking the silence and restoring reality.

According to its website:

GWD is a campaigning and advocacy group formed by Green Party members defending women’s sex-based rights. We combat the chilling atmosphere of censure within the Green Party of England and Wales, support members who speak up for biological reality, and work to reform policy so that sex-based protections are restored to Green politics. Our declaration has been signed by over 1600 Party members and supporters.

On March 4, it announced that “having exhausted all internal channels,” it “has formally begun legal proceedings” against the Green Party because the party refused them a stall during last year’s party conference.

According to a March 4 article in The Times:

The Green Party has been accused of carrying out a “witch-hunt” against people with gender-critical views after it allegedly refused to allow campaigners a stall at party conference.

Lawyers for Green Women’s Declaration claim the decision was “a deliberate and unlawful attempt to prevent women from expressing gender-critical views”.

The gender-critical group also plans to sue over the party’s definition of “queerphobia”, which rules it is transphobic to suggest trans women are “not real women”. In a pre-action letter sent last week, the group claimed the definition “precisely encapsulates a gender-critical view”.

The Times quotes Jude English, a director of the group, as saying:

The way the Green Party has been acting is akin to a witch-hunt, purging people with gender-critical views. We were middle-aged ladies with leaflets who wanted to go inside the conference last year and talk about these issues. The cancellation of our stall was simply the party’s leadership saying, ‘We can’t allow these women’s voices inside [the leader Zack Polanski’s] big conference.’

She continued:

Safety is being used as an excuse for censorship, and the queerphobia guidance is a kind of nonsense that they’ve made up to justify this ideology they have become wedded to. As soon as you’re accused of being queerphobic, you’re smeared and nasty — and therefore you’re out.

I discussed this group in my 2023 book The Reckoning: How the Democrats and the Left Betrayed Women and Girls, in a chapter about how women are fighting (and sometimes fleeing) their left-leaning parties all over the world. The book was intended as a warning to the US Democrats about what was likely to happen in November of 2024 if they did not start supporting women and girls as a sex class. Needless to say, the Democrats did not heed the warning.

This is what I said:

Discontent within the party continues to brew. In 2023, women in the party announced the “Green Women’s Declaration,” stating, “This Declaration has been initiated by members of the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) who believe in the right to advocate for women as a sex. Women’s rights, based on the reality of biological sex, have been eroded within the GPEW, as elsewhere in society. We believe the consequences of this disregard for the protected characteristic of sex are extremely damaging for women and girls, especially lesbians, mothers and those who are disabled. There now exists a chilling atmosphere of censure and fear within the Party, which affects not only free speech but also free thought.”

In a message to me, Zoe Hatch, one of the GWD directors said:

This is about whether women can take part in political life while holding beliefs that the law protects. Women who have spent decades campaigning for the environment and quietly building the foundations of the Green Party have been sanctioned, censored and now banned from conference.

We’ve tried everything to work with the Party on this issue. We wrote letters, we raised Whistleblowing concerns, we met with the CEO. At every stage we have been met with silence, deflection or punishment.

We booked a stall at conference to talk to members about women’s rights, the Party cancelled it two days before the event and following a smear campaign that targeted us for our beliefs. No reasons given, no conversation. Taking legal action is our last resort but now we are here, we are determined to seek justice for Women and Planet.

To the women of the UK Green Women’s Declaration: Thank you for taking this strong stand in support of women’s sex-based rights. You were one inspiration behind my launch of the Democratic Women’s Declaration in 2024. I am sorry the Green Party did not allow you to have a stall at last year’s conference, but I’m not surprised. You worked so hard to get them to come around! I’m so happy to hear that you’re suing them over that and over their ridiculous use of the word “queerphobia.” Together, we are going to win this fight, globally, and you are a big part of the reason why. Today’s FFS Friday is for you.
