Today’s FFS Friday honors the girls in Loudoun County, Virginia, who are urging voters to vote for school board members who will protect single-sex spaces in county schools.

It’s very challenging when I know that there are boys in the girls’ locker rooms or even the bathrooms, which concerns me a lot.
On Wednesday, August 11, 2021, the Loudoun County School Board approved Policy 8040: “Rights of Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students.” The policy, which can be found here, allows students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with their opposite-sex “gender identities.” I went to Loudoun County twice in 2021 (once in August and again in October) to stand up for the girls. Here’s a photo of a group of us standing outside the district administration building:
We were there at the invitation of Natassia Grover, whose daughter Jolene spoke out about the policy in June of that year. Jolene wore a t-shirt that read “Woman is female” and said to the members of the school board, “Everyone knows what a boy is, even you! Your proposed policies are dangerous and rooted in sexism.” The New York Post reported on it at the time, including a video clip of Jolene’s entire statement. Natassia invited us into her home, where we drank coffee, had snacks, and made signs before the event.
For the past four years, students (of both sexes) have been demanding a policy change, and the district has essentially ignored them. So now, they’re taking matters into their own hands.
Local ABC 7 has reported that the controversy has gotten students involved in the local school board elections and that students are actively encouraging voters to vote for members who will get the policy changed. The story contains a 2-minute video that is very worth a watch.
According to that reporting:
Thousands of Loudoun County voters have the opportunity to vote for their school board representatives in this year’s election.
This comes as the current school board is fighting to keep its locker room and bathroom policy, titled Policy 8040. The U.S. Department of Education said that policy violates Title IX.
As early voting is underway, some teens are greeting Loudoun County voters at the polls and asking them to choose school board candidates who would restore girl only and boy only bathrooms and locker rooms in Loudoun County Public Schools.
One girl was recorded saying, “I am in support of Matt Mallone. He is helping the students protect against boys coming in the girls’ locker room.”
Another said, “It’s very challenging when I know that there are boys in the girls’ locker rooms or even the bathrooms, which concerns me a lot.”
There are boys standing up for single-spaces too, and good for them! I don’t want to take anything away from them; boys have just as much right to male-only spaces as girls have to female-only spaces (though girls face a significantly higher risk of violence from boys than boys face from girls).
But here, I’m honoring the girls, simply because these pages are all about bringing awareness to the voices of women and girls.
So, to the Loudoun County girls who are getting actively involved in encouraging voters to vote for board members who will protect single-sex spaces, good for you! I’m sorry you have to do this. I’m sorry your district ignored your concerns. I wish you didn’t have to be doing this. Having single-sex locker rooms and bathrooms should be a no-brainer! However, I’m very happy that you’re getting involved in this manner. If your school board won’t protect you, you need new board members who will. Well done! Today’s FFS Friday is for you.

Another top notch entry in this top notch series. Thanks for including the ABC link, a decent job of reporting on this, and good to see. These young women and men show here both tremendous courage and also a brilliant piece of grass roots organizing. They should not, as you so rightly note, have to be doing this all, but it is fantastic form to see this, and I hope they are successful.
While I applaud the girls, it's not clear to me that the school board can legally rescind this policy. Virginia, like most blue states, has a gender self-ID law on the books. It prohbits discrimination on the basis of "gender identity" in "public accommodations", which would include schools. https://bluevirginia.us/2020/04/governor-northam-signs-virginia-values-act
