The White House’s Apparent Reversal(s?) on “Gender Affirming Care”
And some important Title IX developments
July 4, 2024
I know everyone on this side of the Atlantic is probably out eating BBQ, watching fireworks, and having a great time with family. I hope readers have a lovely holiday!
But if I could ask you to do one thing today, it would be to head over to a petition by the medical group Do No Harm and sign it. The petition calls on Rachel (Richard) Levine to resign and, failing that, for Biden to fire him. The reason? Levine pressured the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) to remove all age limitations on the provision of puberty blockers, wrong-sex hormones, and so called “gender-affirming” surgeries for minors. WPATH did exactly that in September 2022.
A few days after it came out that Levine had pressured WPATH to take this step, the White House announced that it would no longer support “gender-affirming” surgeries for minors. Women’s Declaration International USA (WDI USA) issued a statement explaining why we’re skeptical that the White House means what it says and why opposing surgeries isn’t nearly enough anyway. Later, the White House came out with some even more confusing statements.
So what’s going on at the Biden White House when it comes to “gender-affirming care?”
